What to Expect

Our Support Services Clerks will call 24 hours prior to your appointment to remind you to bring your current medications and insurance card.

Support Services Clerks will call 24 hours prior to your appointment to remind you to bring your current medications and insurance card.

Support Services will check you in once you arrive and give you the new patient packet to fill out prior to your appointment. They will then review your paperwork and let the ORO team know you are here. Our nursing staff will call you and walk you to an exam room. The nurse will take a brief medical history, review current medications, and perform a vitals check. They will then discuss radiation treatments and side effects. The nurses will answer any questions you may have. The doctor will then see you, answer any additional questions, and determine the next steps in your treatment plan.

You will receive a simulation as a part of your treatment plan. During the simulation, a custom immobilization device may be created to help with lying still during your treatment. Once the simulation is complete the radiation therapists will draw marks on your skin. You will need to keep these marks on your skin until your next appointment. These marks are not permanent.

Our next step will be to create your treatment plan. The doctor will determine how many treatments you will need and how best to do your treatment in coordination with our dosimetrist and physicist from the information gathered during the simulation. Once your treatment plan is complete, we will contact you to schedule your next appointment.

This appointment may last approximately one hour. You will meet the Radiation Therapy team. They will guide you to your treatment room and the treatment machine, called the LINAC. The therapists will position you on the LINAC to match your position during simulation using the marks on your skin and the immobilization device created.

Imaging will be done on the LINAC to ensure proper positioning for treatment. These images will be reviewed by the doctor prior to beginning treatment. Once approved, your treatment can begin. Some patients will begin treatment during this appointment and others may be scheduled to return the following day. The treatments will be scheduled by the therapy staff and will be Monday through Friday at the same time each day. The number of treatment sessions will vary based on the doctors plan, which is customized to each patient and can be anywhere from a few days to nine weeks.

Your team will bring you to the LINAC room for your treatments. The team will do everything they can to make you as comfortable as possible. Daily or weekly imaging will be performed to ensure accuracy of treatment.

While receiving your treatment, your therapists will be monitoring you closely on video and audio from the console. The treatment session will last a minimum of 15 minutes.

Once a week you will visit with the doctor and nursing staff for an On Treatment Visit throughout the course of your treatment.
